Let’s talk about superpowers!
What superpower(s) do you have, and how are you using it to your advantage?
I know what you’re likely thinking – that superpowers only apply to the superheroes from the comics and movies we love but guess what. You’ve got it all wrong!
This week on Episode 160 of Productivity Paradox, we’re diving into this concept of superpowers and how we can use ours to leverage the success and happiness that we want.
Because the truth is, you do have a superpower or two inside, waiting to be discovered.
And what’s more, is that it doesn’t take a lot of time to figure out exactly what yours could be! Shining the light on your superpower (or superpowers!) could be another step that will bring you even closer to earning that next promotion, or getting your foot in the door to your dream career.
Let’s jump in!
Before we get too carried away, I want to touch briefly on what a superpower is for us in the real world in the sense that we mean it here and on Episode 160.
A superpower is like a talent or skill we excel at; it’s a dominant strength that is aligned with our focus and our passions. It’s something that, when used often and mastered, we can use as a catalyst to success in our professional lives – and even at home.
Many of you have told me that you have trouble assessing your strengths. And I get that!
We don’t always consider our dominant strengths when we’re working to tap into things that make us unique or stand out from our peers, because – well, a dominant strength is just that: dominant! But it’s important that we do.
They are, after all, the foundation of our superpower(s)!
A dominant strength is something that likely comes easily to us, and that we don’t need to think a lot about when we’re engaging with it. Skills like writing, public speaking, listening, organizing, and so forth, all fit the bill here.
As you’re working to tap into your strengths, think of things that come easy to you or that a friend or colleague has told you that you do well. (Note: there’s a list of ideas to get you started on the worksheet!)
Once you’ve narrowed down your list of strengths (i.e., possible superpowers), the next thing to consider is your focus.
As you’re working down through the list of strengths you’ve curated, I want you to consider which ones seem as though time flies by whenever you’re engaged with them.
Maybe you’re laser-focused and in the zone the most when you’re managing a project. Or maybe you feel like time stops when you’re writing an article or editing for a client.
Cross out the strengths that you don’t resonate with on this level, and keep those that do right where they are. The last test to put your list through is the passion test!
You’ve determined your strengths that you’re able to focus your energy on almost effortlessly – now, what?
It’s time to assess whether these potential superpowers are aligned with what you’re most passionate about in life. Do the strengths you’ve written down or circled on your worksheet mesh well with your professional goals and other aspirations?
If they do, then it’s likely you’ve stumbled upon your very own superpower. Now, my next question is, how are you going to ensure you’re putting it to the best use? (Head over to Episode 160 for more!)
