Love Yourself Challenge: How to Increase Your Self-Care for February

Last February, we celebrated Galentine’s Day (February 13th) with our Share The Love campaign on social media and in your email inbox. Each day in the week leading up to Galentine’s, we asked you to share with us and comment about the various people in your life who you love.

This year I wanted to make it even better for you. I want to talk about how we can show ourselves love, too. This challenge goes so well with this season of my podcast, Productivity Paradox, which is all about investing in YOU.

We’re often concerned about the big holiday, and what to do to show our partner or family that we love them. I encourage you to show yourself a lot of love this month  – and I’ll give you step-by-step tips on how to start (and maintain) your self-love.

I didn’t put the entire “Me Time” section on the Monthly Mission Boards for nothing. Really use this section this month to make February spectacular! Here’s a few ways to get you started:

 

Mental – I’m a big advocate for continuous learning. I’m always reading a book, watching an interesting documentary, talking with others about business or parenting, and looking for ways to  learn how I can better run my business. Take some time to decide on one or two new things you’d like to learn about this month, and dedicate blocks into schedule for that.

Emotional –  Spend time with your favorite people and pets! Look at how much time you’re spending on social media or watching Netflix, and make sure to prioritize the people around you who make you happiest. As important as this is, make sure you’re also setting aside quality time for yourself, by yourself. Whether that’s quiet time at home and a bath, or if you’re wanting to go out and get a massage… do something fun with family and friends, as well as making time for your own self care.

Physical – Get moving this month. Be more intentional and aware of how you’re spending your time at work, at home, in the evenings and morning, etc. You can get in a little break at work by going for a walk or helping out with more physical tasks instead of staying at your desk. You can even look into standing desks for your office!

Implement more movement in your morning and/or evening routines. It could be a full workout or just a 10 minutes walk and stretching. Either way, you’ll feel more awake!

 

Give Your Goals Some Love

Get started or stay motivated goal setting, planning and prioritizing with one of my favorite downloads. Choose from the ACTION Roadmap or the 5 Minutes to Peak Productivity worksheets (or you can download both!). Part of loving yourself is caring and nurturing what’s most important to you. Sit down and look at your progress with your goals and dreams, and make a plan for moving forward so you can feel successful and satisfied at the end of each day.

 

Write It Down

I’ve talked a lot about the importance of writing things down for your brain to remember. It creates a connection there unlike if you typed it or if you thought about it. Consider keeping a little journal where you can write down your thoughts, goals, hopes, or even your worries. This can be really beneficial before bedtime to get your feeling down on paper. It’s actually been proven that this can help you fall asleep (and sleep better!) as well as begin your day with a fresh start.

Don’t forget that sharing the love with others can still mean that you’re loving yourself. Give your friend a call and see how they’re doing, or shoot them a text asking how their day has been. But better yet, plan an evening out with a friend or a whole group to get in that quality time. Sometimes we tell ourselves that we don’t have enough time to go out… that we have to clean, or make dinner for kids, etc. While those things need to get done, allow yourself the grace and time to have fun with those who make you laugh and bring your spirits up. Show your friends you’re thinking about them and that it’s important to spend time with them, and you’ll reap the benefits, too.

You might be wondering how you can simply fit this in, but it’s all about delegating and banking up time in your week. Episode 022 was all about how to create pockets of time in your day… so I suggest listening to that episode on your way to work or as you make dinner to get a few ideas!

 

Treat Yourself (in a Healthy Way)

There’s a number of ways you can give yourself a treat… in a healthy way. Here’s just a few things I personally like to do that are enjoyable and boost my productivity every time I do any of them:

  • Morning meditations (5-10 minutes each morning will do wonders!)
  • Evening yoga
  • Sunday rituals (mine consists of at-home facials and relaxing baths)
  • Family hikes on the weekend
  • Cooking a new recipe you’ve been wanting to try
  • Unplug from technology and begin a book you’ve been wanting to read
  • Grab frozen yogurt (ideal if you need something sweet)
  • Journal or write in your planner positive affirmation

 

Share in the comments below how you plan to share the love this month – whether for yourself or with others. These are just a few ideas… but really, it is about what works best for you and what makes you happy. I, of course, encourage you to do things like this throughout each month.

You don’t have to try and get all these things accomplished in February. Pick a few that you can easily integrate into your life and know that you deserve it! Happy Planning!

    Hi Lucy, I also practice morning meditations often… I feel like it prepares my mind for the day ahead and relaxes me at the same time. I’ve mentioned a few times that also drinking a full glass of water in the morning has actually made a difference, so if you don’t do that right now I would recommend it.     Tonya I love this topic which is so important for women, as we usually put ourselves last on the priority list. I help my clients create a “Mind-Body-Spirit” self-love goal list which includes many of the suggestions in your article.

    I especially like the idea of unplugging from technology, especially social media, as it often unknowingly lowers our self-esteem by comparing our lives to the lives of others.

    I would love to see a special page in your planner next year that includes space for a 30 day challenge…just sayin’!

    I just received my planner this week & have been listening to podcasts—yeah, story of my life: always behind! I’m hoping this system changes that. So my Loving Myself time this month will be devoted to setting up & using my new planning system. I have also signed up for a series of video lessons on using alcohol markers, an interest I’ve had for a while that is relaxing & fun. I also very much want to write positive affirmations &/or gratitudes every day.

I understand that January can be a hectic time and we’re all getting used to a new year and getting back to routines. I would suggest writing a daily affirmation in one of your daily boxes in your planner… I’ve heard a lot of people do this and love it!

    Hi Lynette! I am loving the self-care/love yourself challenge this month too. I’ve made an effort to go on a ‘whitespace vacation’ with John to simply relax and clear my mind.

    I think your activities sound wonderful. I love that you’re being intentional with meditations, too. Often, writing down that we are being intentional and creating a SMART goal that is specific will lead us to accomplishing that goal. And I’m so glad you’re using your iPhones in a productive and educational way TOGETHER! That’s great.

    Thank you, Tonya, for the reminder and challenge to do something for ourselves and for the tips to do so! I have so many outside demands on me that I am totally at the bottom of my list. I started out the year with goals and so many of them have already gotten put aside because of other people’s needs. I am definitely going to try to get back on track doing something for me. Reading each day and improve my photography skills are two things I plan to do. I don’t want to arrive at the end of another year with nothing changing. I seem to have a lot of the same goals each year and I know nothing will change unless I do!

    Absolutely love the theme for this month! Too often people put self care at the bottom of their priorities when it is so crucial to do! For my self care I recently indulged in some higher end shampoo and conditioner. It has made the world of difference with my hair and it smells so good! I also love getting chiropractic adjustments. They really help me feel centered and back to myself.
