No-Stress November Challenge: Holiday Prep

Let’s get started on another monthly challenge: No Stress November. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, I’ll be giving you tips and steps to help you feel a little less stressed around this time of year!

I think when we look at all there is to do for a holiday like Thanksgiving it can be overwhelming. But just like a big goal or task, you just need to break it down into bite-sized bits.

Right now during this first week of November, people tend to fall into one of two camps – those who are already stressing about the big holiday and those who haven’t given it a second thought (and then wait until the Wednesday before to completely freak out). We’re going to make our own camp here – the ones who plan ahead and stay focused and relaxed. Ready?

This is the time to start thinking about who is coming. You don’t need to worry with fancy invites – a phone call is nice. If you can’t swing a phone call, who cares – there are a lot of cute sites and even apps that help you to create a sweet little invite with little time and effort that you can text or email out. Now’s the time to figure out who’s on board for the holiday. (Oh, and who needs to crash at your house for the long weekend!)

Now that you have an idea of how many peeps will be attending your feast, you might want to take a few minutes to check your place settings. There’s nothing worse that not having enough dishes or chairs for everyone around the table. If you don’t have enough, don’t sweat it… I guarantee you have at least one or two friends or neighbors who are not be hosting the big day and will be nice enough to let you borrow. The other option is renting… if you are thinking about renting, you will definitely want to go ahead and call to reserve your goods. Thanksgiving is pretty busy for rental shops, so you don’t want to wait until the last minute.

Think through what all you want to have at your table. Don’t worry right now about finding recipes, just think about what foods you’d like to have on the day. Are you doing turkey or a ham? It’s really up to you…

There’s no rule that says that if you host, you have to provide all the food or even decor. Since you’ve thought out your meal plan, you can start handing out the assignments. It’s okay… no one thinks anything of bringing a dish if you are providing the space. Is your dad coming, but he doesn’t know how to cook? Assign him something like candles or being in charge of the music playlist. Thanksgiving is a time for everyone to come together – no one expects you to do and make everything. They really don’t.

Okay, week one, four tasks… it’s completely doable isn’t it? We have four days left of this week, so you can do one per day or all in one day! It’s up to you, but I think the important part is to get started now.
