Revamp Your Morning Routine

When it comes to your mornings, I want to know… Are you waking up as refreshed and ready to go as you could be?

This week on Episode 121 of Productivity Paradox, we’re talking all about our mornings and how we can benefit from some of those early hours before anyone else in the household is fully awake (and if you have kids, then you understand how HUGE this idea can be when it comes to getting a jump-start on your day!)

Not only that, but we’re diving in deep to the research that surrounds how the brain functions in the morning, and how our night time routines can be a huge help when it comes to setting ourselves up for a successful, refreshing start to the day—no matter how “busy” we perceive ourselves at home or at work.

So, keeping in tune with that “morning theme”, I thought I would share some of the tried and true methods to give your morning routine a boost so that you’re able to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever life sends your way.

Let’s jump in!

10 Ways to Revamp Your Morning Routine

1. Wake up Earlier—

I know, I know… This can be a challenge, especially when we’re first starting out on this particular goal. But nudging yourself to wake up just a bit earlier in the morning doesn’t have to be as scary (or as impossible) as it sounds!

We go over this a bit more in this week’s episode, but for now… You can download a free copy of my Blueprint to Getting Up Earlier here to help you get started!

2. Set Your Alarm to Something Pleasant –

I don’t know about you, but the sound of something synonymous to a fire alarm, fog horn, or a warning bell just makes me want to hit the snooze button a thousand times over, instead of giving me the motivation that I need to get myself up for the day.

Considering that, I encourage you to find a sound that is just a bit more pleasing than your average alarm bell… Ideally something that gently nudges you from your sleep, rather than something that blasts you awake each day—because, let’s face it, how refreshing is that?

3. Say NO to Screen Time –

When I started looking to improve my morning routine, I will admit that this was a big struggle for me! In the attempt to keep from hitting the snooze button, I would open up my emails or social media and start scrolling.

But let me also be the first to tell you that this is an awful idea!

Looking at your phone the first thing in the morning immediately launches you into the world of news, politics, and so much more… and completely removes you from the present moment. And since we’re always talking about the importance of being mindful with our time, then you already see where I’m going here, right?

Looking at your phone before you’ve even gotten out of bed also sets you up for a huge time warp… What starts out as an intention of only glancing at your email or social media feed, for example, can easily transform into a solid 45 minutes of mindless scrolling—and that just won’t do!

So, when in doubt, keep your phone out of sight for at least a solid hour after you first wake up so that you can focus on other things that will set your morning up for success!

4. Hydrate Immediately –

We may not think about this too often, but here’s the thing: when we sleep, our bodies get dehydrated! So, to that end, reach for a glass of water to replenish what your body lost while you were sleeping…

It’s one of the simplest ways that you can help yourself feel refreshed, and it’s an easy way that you can wake up your body to get you started on the right foot!

5. Eat Breakfast –

There’s a reason that your grandmother, your mother, and every other wise person you know has always told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Give your brain, your body and your metabolism the jump-start it needs and make sure that you’re allowing yourself some time to enjoy something healthy to eat in the morning before you rush out to work or to cross off some tasks on your list.

Not enough time for a big sit-down meal? No problem! Just treat yourself to something small and healthy, and you’ll be good to go.

6. Meditate or Journal (or Both!) –

Meditation and journaling are two great ways to set some positive intentions for your day… So even if you only have ten or fifteen minutes, please give this one a try.

Not only can this help you rid some bothersome thoughts from your mind, but it is also a great way to instill a sense of gratitude that you can carry with you throughout the day. Remember, good vibes can go a long way when it comes to productivity and motivation… And if you want a great way to kick-start your morning and give your routine a boost, then this is the way to go!

7. Plan Your Day –

Studies have shown that setting goals is correlated with big increases in confidence and feelings of control… So, with that in mind, one big way to revamp your morning routine is to set aside a little bit of time to plan out your day.

What are one or two things that you’d like to accomplish before the day is through? Focus on scheduling in some time for you to concentrate on those goals… and watch your productivity and your confidence flourish!

8. Exercise –

There’s no other way to say it… Working out makes you mentally and physically healthier and stronger, and it increases your longevity as well!

To get the most out of your mornings, give your routine a boost by allowing a little bit of time to stretch or engage in one of your favorite workouts. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!

9. Allow Time for a Hobby or Self-Care –

I suppose technically, all of the things we’ve discussed so far could be classified under ‘self-care’ items… But what I really mean when I say allow some time for a hobby is exactly that, what is one thing that you really enjoy that you don’t often give yourself time for otherwise?

Use some of the early morning hours to focus on a hobby or another activity that will bring you joy… Not only will this help you to set a positive spin on your day, but it is also a great way to allow yourself to relax before the day really begins and the chaos of, well, LIFE sets in.

10. Set a Positive Tone –

Creating an affirmation or mantra for yourself is a great way to put a positive spin on your day, and this is especially true if you’ve been feeling low for any reason.

A few examples include:

–I can take on this day…

–When I follow my heart, I am abundant, successful, and free…

–I embrace the space between where I am and where I want to be…

…And so on!

Create a mantra that will help you put a positive spin on your day to be sure that you’re beginning each morning on a high note and that you’re setting the tone for whatever follows.

BONUS!

Strike a Power Pose –

Have a lot on your plate? Cultivate the confidence that you need to accomplish whatever you’re faced with by striking a power pose…

We’ve talked about this a few times before, but if you need a refresher on what a power pose looks like, then refer to Amy Cuddy’s TEDTalk here and start practicing!
