All throughout Season 11 of Productivity Paradox, we’ve been talking about making small changes in life for a big impact. This week on Episode 139, we’re continuing that conversation by highlighting the one thing that can have a significant impact on your outlook—which is confidence.
Having confidence can be the difference between wanting to jump into something that you’re really passionate about, or just sitting on the sidelines wishing and thinking about it—but never really doing anything to make it happen.
But even considering that, finding and cultivating confidence within yourself can be a challenge! And this is especially true if we don’t have the tools it takes to truly dive in deep and find it in the first place, or worse if we’ve been conditioned to talk down to ourselves, question our abilities and talents, and so on and so forth.
So in light of finding the tools that we need to cultivate confidence so that we can make the big impact on our outlook on life that we’re focusing on in the episode this week, I thought I would share with you what I find to be helpful in cultivating and maintaining confidence no matter what it is that you want to pursue in life, and no matter how steep the climb to the top might be.
Ready to dig in?
The very first step or “C,” when it comes to building confidence comes by way of developing a clear vision for yourself.
What is it that you’re most passionate about, and what might your journey look like in the pursuit of that passion?
In other words, when it comes to the development of a goal, a big project, or something else, you must get your head around what your desired outcome looks like.
The clearer you are, the more you’re able to prepare for what it will take to achieve your ambitions, and the more confident you will feel when you gear up to take that first step on the road to your success (personal, career, or otherwise).
It’s no secret that when you’re genuinely committed to something, whether it’s a job, a hobby, or something else, you’re more likely to do your best to see any goals or projects tied to that commitment through to fruition.
After all, commitments help instill confidence! When you create a repeated pattern of “stick-to-itness,” confidence becomes a natural reward—and that’s when we can really begin to believe in ourselves.
Here is where having a tried and true support system comes in handy, and it’s simple to see why: when we lack confidence in ourselves, we tend to feel vulnerable about going after what we want in life.
To help relieve some of that self-doubt, connecting with a trusted friend, family member, or co-worker, for example, can become the lifeboat you need to keep your head above water when you feel your confidence wavering—whether it’s from fear of getting started, fear of failure, or just your regular run of the mill anxiety (which, let’s face it, can be utterly debilitating in and of itself).
When in doubt, reach out to the support system around you to give yourself the boost you need. The people that you have in your corner are there to lift you up when you need it, so don’t hesitate to take full advantage when you’re feeling uneasy!
It’s one of my favorite pieces of advice to lend (and receive): Just start!
Whether you’re looking to pursue something of the creative variety (i.e., writing that novel, getting started on the painting you’ve been dreaming of, etc.) or another project altogether, you must allow yourself the opportunity to dig in.
The main takeaway here is that by allowing yourself the grace to simply begin—somewhere, anywhere, you’re giving yourself the opportunity to build the momentum (and the confidence) you need to keep going.
Even the tiniest of steps lead to small rewards, and the more steps you take, the more rewards you reap!
Now, I don’t know about you, but to me, there is nothing quite like allowing myself a few moments (or a lot of moments!) to truly sit back, reflect, and celebrate my wins when it comes to a passion project.
Because here’s the thing: too often, we forget to celebrate our progress when it comes to pursuing a goal we’ve set.
But that doesn’t mean that I only celebrate those more significant milestones; I think celebrating even the smallest accomplishments in the pursuit of a goal or project are just as worthy of a cause to celebrate too!
So, no matter what it is that you’re looking to go after when it comes to what you’re most passionate about, don’t allow your wins to fall to the wayside. Instead, celebrate them—no matter what.
The more you shout your successes from the rooftops, the easier it will be to maintain your momentum (and your confidence) along your passion-inspired journey. Trust me!
